NEW DELHI (Reuters) -- Former Australian captain Greg Chappell and New Zealand opener John Wright have been shortlisted for the India coaching job vacated by Kapil Dev.

"Only Greg Chappell and John Wright will meet us," Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jaywant Lele said from Sharjah on Tuesday.

He said they will be interviewed in Madras on October 23 and a decision would be reached then.

Board president A.C. Muthiah and former board president Raj Singh Dungarpur, now chairman of the National Cricket Academy, will conduct the interviews.

Lele added: "I think we do need the services of a foreign coach because there are lots of things we can learn. If we look at some of the foreign teams like Australia and South Africa they seem to work hard on planning strategies.

"In the past we have tried many Indian coaches like Madan Lal, Kapil Dev, Sandeep Patil and Anshuman Gaekwad and we thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to look for a foreign coach. The very thinking is to improve the standard of the Indian team.

"We have consulted the present members of the Indian team and their views on the subject are positive."

Former captain and all-rounder Dev resigned in September less than halfway through his contract after becoming embroiled in a match-fixing scandal. He said he was innocent of all allegations.

Lele refused to talk about the terms of the contract, but Muthiah had said earlier that it would run for two years.

"We will discuss the terms of the contract during the meeting and it wouldn't be wise on my part to speculate whether the job of the coach will be performance-linked or for a certain fixed period," Lele said.

"At the moment we are not thinking about having an assistant coach. First, let us finalize the foreign coach and then we will see."

Former Australia coach and vice-captain Geoff Marsh withdrew his application earlier.

He said through the West Australian Cricket Association that he had dropped out for family reasons.

Former Australian batsman Dean Jones and West Indies paceman Andy Roberts were also said to be in the running at one time.
