Accused pair cooperate Jadeja, Mongia register match-fixing statements
MADRAS, India (Reuters) -- Test players Ajay Jadeja and Nayan Mongia made statements on Sunday to an official investigating Indian cricketers named in a federal police match-fixing report. But former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, one of the five Indian players named in the report and who had been asked to make a similar statement, did not appear, said the official, K. Madhavan, a former joint director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Madhavan, who is conducting the inquiry on behalf of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said he hoped Azharuddin would answer a request to make a statement when the investigation continued in New Delhi on Tuesday. “It would have been better if he could have come to Madras,” Madhavan said after completing two days of hearings. One-day specialist Jadeja, wicket-keeper Mongia and former team physiotherapist Ali Irani made their statements before Madhavan on Sunday. Former all-rounder Manoj Prabhakar met the BCCI investigator on Saturday. The CBI match-fixing report released on November 1 accuses Azharuddin of fixing matches and also names Jadeja, Prabhakar, Mongia, Ajay Sharma and Irani. Madhavan is expected to interview Ajay Sharma on Tuesday. “Now I am in a very relaxed frame of mind,” Jadeja told reporters after meeting Madhavan. Jadeja has denied that he took money to under-perform at any level of cricket. He had issued a 15-page rebuttal of charges against him in the CBI report. Madhavan said he would interview BCCI president A.C. Muthiah later on Sunday. The CBI report castigated the BCCI for sitting idly by while corruption infected the game and hinted at collusion by BCCI officials in match-fixing. Madhavan said he would be giving his report to the BCCI and it was up to the board to take action on it. BCCI has suspended all five players named in the report from domestic cricket pending a final decision when the internal inquiry is completed.
