DHAKA (Reuters) -- Bangladesh's inaugural cricket test, having started on a high note, ended in a nine-wicket defeat by India on Monday.

The 10th and newest side to the test arena was skittled for 91 in its second innings, only 62 ahead, and India swept to success at 64 for one on the fourth day.

Bangladesh, which launched the match encouragingly by making exactly 400 in its first innings, was undone by the pace of Javagal Srinath (3-19) and the left-arm spin of Sunil Joshi (3-27) when it batted again 29 behind.

Man-of-the-match Joshi had also made his mark with the bat earlier in the day, finishing with 92 as India extended its overnight 366 for seven to 429 all out.

Bangladesh, whose first innings total was the second highest by a team in its maiden test, behind Zimbabwe's 456 against India at Harare in 1992-93, could scarcely have produced a more contrasting effort in the second innings.

Only two players reached double figures, Habul Bashar making 30 and Khaled Masud scoring an unbeaten 21, as Bangladesh's last seven wickets tumbled for 38.

At the start of the day, the Bangladesh spinners shared the three remaining Indian wickets to end the innings seven minutes before lunch after 63 had been added.

Left-arm spinner Mohammad Rafiq upset Joshi's hopes of a test century, having India's top scorer caught by Al Shahriar at mid-off when he was eight short of the landmark.

Rafiq also removed Srinath for two to finish with three for 117.

Captain Naimur Rahman, who snatched five wickets on Sunday, added one more to end with six for 132 after removing Ajit Agarkar for 34.

India now returns home to prepare for a two-test series against Zimbabwe starting on Saturday.
