Carrying on Moin Khan to continue as Pakistan's captain
KARACHI, Pakistan (Reuters) -- Wicketkeeper Moin Khan is to be retained as Pakistan cricket captain until the team's tour to England in May, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said on Monday. The chairman of the PCB Tauqir Zia said the cricket managers were satisfied with the way the wicketkeeper has handled the team. "Of course, there is always room for improvement and I am sure with Moin being a fighter and a keen learner, he will quickly master the art of marshalling his troops and take the right decisions at the right time," the PCB boss said. Moin was initially appointed captain until the home series against England which concludes on Monday. The fresh six-month contract says Moin will now captain the the team during a further five tests, including two against England, and over 20 one-day internationals that also include triangular one-day competitions in Sharjah in April and in England. "The tour to England will be extremely challenging and difficult. We don't want to change this (team) combination because I would like to see the team management learn from their mistakes and go on," Zia said. "The ongoing series (against England) has been a great learning exercise for everyone." Moin, a veteran of 61 tests and 250 one-day internationals, has led Pakistan in 11 tests winning three and losing one. "Obviously we would like Moin, Inzamam and Javed Miandad combination to continue until the 2003 World Cup. But we have decided to monitor the performances and go either series-by-series or by offering six months contracts," the PCB boss said. Haq has been retained as vice-captain while Miandad has been appointed coach until the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. Moin was delighted with the news. "Naturally you feel proud and honored when the administrators keep faith in your abilities. I know I have not been up to my best, but I am learning with every match, every situation and every day," he said. Pakistan coach Javed Miandad said Moin deserved to be the leader because he has a cricketing brain and is a shrewd operator. "He thinks fast and positive."
