MELBOURNE (Reuters) -- Australian selector Geoff Marsh has resigned and will be replaced by his former test teammate David Boon, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) said on Wednesday.

Marsh, 41, a former Australian opening batsman and later coach, has quit to take up a cricket consulting role with the Indian board, the ACB said in a statement.

He had been short-listed with fellow former Australian batsman Greg Chappell to become India's first foreign coach but the ex-New Zealand captain John Wright was awarded the post in early November.

Boon, Australia's fourth-highest run-scorer, made 7,422 runs in 107 tests at an average of 43.65 between 1984-85 and 1995-96.

Boon, 39, currently works with the Tasmanian Cricket Association in a promotional role.

He will take his place immediately on the selection panel alongside former test players Trevor Hohns, Allan Border and Andrew Hilditch, the ACB said.

Marsh and Boon played in Australia's World Cup-winning side of 1987 and Marsh coached the Australian team who won the 1999 World Cup before he resigned, to be replaced by John Buchanan.
