PERTH, Australia (Reuters) -- Michael Bevan made 135 not out to lead New South Wales to a six-wicket victory over defending champion Western Australia in the final of the Mercantile Cup one-day competition Sunday.

The 30-year-old Bevan, Australia's leading one-day batsman but unable to win a test cap in the past three years, hit 14 fours and one six for New South Wales as it made 276 for four in 48.2 overs in reply to Western Australia's 272 for seven.

Western Australia's captain Tom Moody won the toss and opened the innings, scoring 78 from 79 balls with 12 fours and one six.

Mike Hussey top-scored with 84 in 68 balls, including eight fours and three sixes.

Hussey and Kade Harvey (20 not out) shared an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 87, scoring at almost nine an over.

New South Wales lost hard-hitting wicketkeeper/batsman Brad Haddin for eight in the fourth over to make it 14 for one but Michael Clarke (57) and Bevan, who faced 137 balls, then added 126 for the second wicket.

Mark Higgs (29) and Graeme Rummans (30 not out) provided Bevan with support as he continued his onslaught.
