Best of the best Bradman, Tayfield head test performances listUpdated: Thursday July 26, 2001 12:46 PM BOMBAY (Reuters) -- Don Bradman and South African off-spinner Hugh Tayfield head a list for all-time best test batting and bowling performances announced by Wisden on Thursday. Bradman, regarded as the best batsman to have ever played the game, tops the list for his 270 made against England in the Melbourne third test of the 1936-37 series. His innings enabled Australia to narrow a 2-0 deficit and eventually go on to win the series. Two Bradman innings figure among the top 10, his unbeaten 299 against South Africa in Adelaide in the 1931-32 series rated fifth in the all-time list. Brian Lara is placed second for his 153 not out in Bridgetown during West Indies' 2-2 home series draw against Australia in the 1998-99 season. Lara's 375, the world record for the highest test innings made in St John's, Antigua, against England in 1993-94, is 10th in the rankings. Former England opener Graham Gooch is third best for his unbeaten 154 at Headingley against West Indies in 1991. Tayfield is given pride of place among bowlers for his haul of nine for 113 in the Johannesburg test against England in the 1956-57 series. Indian leg-spinner Anil Kumble and England off-spinner Jim Laker follow next for their historic efforts of taking all 10 wickets in a test innings. Kumble took 10-74 in leading his side to a series-levelling win over Pakistan in the 1998-99 series in New Delhi, 43 years after Laker's 10-53 against Australia. Laker's stunning match haul of 19 for 90 lifted England to victory over Australia at Old Trafford in 1956, giving them a winning 2-1 lead as it retained the Ashes. The parameters used to judge batting performances included runs scored, bowling quality, point of entry, support received from other batsmen while playing and shepherding of tail-enders. The bowling ratings were calculated by assessing the batting quality of the top seven opposing batsmen, quality of batsmen dismissed, bowling accuracy and match status. Wisden authorities said they took the most exhaustive set of parameters ever used in the cricketing world. "The beauty of these ratings is that there is no bias. The only way to get in is to score," Anthony Bouchier, director of Wisden Online, told reporters at the global launch of Wisden 100 in Bombay. Bouchier said the list of top 100 innings ever played and the top 100 bowling performances was the first cricket analysis comparing individual performances. They announced a similar list for one-day performances would be brought out by next year.
