Sumathipala bailed Former Sri Lankan cricket chief faces fraud charges
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- A court has granted anticipatory bail to the former chief of Sri Lanka's cricket governing body accused of misappropriating the cricket board's funds, his lawyer said Monday. An anticipatory bail application was filed by Thilanga Sumathipala at a magistrate's court in Colombo on Thursday, restraining the country's Criminal Investigation Department from unwarranted arrest and harassment. "The court allowed the application on a cash bail of 7,500 rupees (US$83) and a personnel bail of 200,000 rupees (US$2,222)," said Sumathipala's lawyer, Chandana Perera. T. Heiyatudawa, Chief Magistrate of Colombo, granted bail on condition that Sumathipala cooperate with all CID and police investigations and warned him against leaving the island without informing the court. Sumathipala, sacked in March from his post as president of the Board of Control for Cricket, is accused of misappropriating funds from the 400 million rupees (US$4.4 million) allocated for the construction of an international cricket stadium and using 3 million rupees (US$33,333) of the cricket board funds for his personal legal matters. Shortly after Sumathipala's sacking as cricketing chief, Sports Minister Lakshman Kiriella dissolved the entire board and set up an interim committee to run its affairs. Sri Lanka's cricket board is one of the richest organizations in this island nation, where cricket is phenomenally popular.
