Inevitable South Africa cruises to easy victory against IndiaPosted: Tuesday November 27, 2001 12:14 PM
CENTURION, South Africa (AP) -- South Africa drubbed India by an innings and 73 runs Tuesday on the final day of an unofficial match at Supersport Park. Jacques Kallis wrapped up the innings, trapping a stubborn Deep Dasgupta leg before wicket for 27 in the third over after lunch. With Javagal Srinath unable to bat with a broken finger in his left hand, and Venkatesh Prasad also indisposed with a spasm in his neck, the match was all over. Makhaya Ntini was easily the best South African bowler, finishing with two for 26 off 18 tight overs. South Africa's bowlers took five wickets in the morning session to send India crashing to 259 for seven at lunch. Once Sachin Tendulkar was bowled by Ntini without offering a shot for 40, the tourists faced inevitable defeat. Tendulkar was almost out on 16, when he fended off a sharply rising delivery from Jacques Kallis to Gary Kirsten, who dropped the simplest of catches. It proved relatively inexpensive for South Africa as the bowlers had the upper hand throughout on a pitch that showed increasing signs of inconsistent bounce. India was on 118 overnight, after the fourth day was curtailed by rain and bad light. South Africa had already won the three-match series after the final game was stripped of its test status when India refused to play with International Cricket Conference match referee Mike Denness officiating. Denness infuriated the Indians by taking action against Tendulkar and five others for offenses ranging from ball tampering to excessive appealing. The ICC awarded the unplayed test to South Africa after the home team won the first match, with the second drawn.
