Morale blow

Windies' Campbell, Samuels ruled out of second test

SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- West Indies manager Ricky Skerritt told reporters that Campbell fractured the little finger of his right hand during the fourth day of the first test, which Pakistan won by 170 runs Monday.

Samuels, who did not play in the test, underwent emergency surgery Wednesday on his left knee.

"Sherwin will not be able to play for at least 10 days," Skerritt said on the eve of the second test at the Sharjah Stadium.

"Marlon needed emergency surgery on his left knee which is being done in a local hospital today," he explained.

He said that he has asked the West Indies Board of Control for Cricket to send an urgent replacement for the two players.

"The replacement should be here within 24 to 48 hours but it is not appropriate to reveal his name," said Skerritt.

The West Indies are already without Brian Lara and Ramnaresh Sarawan, who are both nursing injuries.

Pakistan, led by one of the worlds fastest bowlers, Shoaib Akhtar's burst 5 for 24 and Abdul Razzaq's 4 for 25, defeated the West Indies by 170 runs on the fifth and final day, with the last seven wickets falling for just 25 runs.

They were bowled out for 171 after being 146 for 3 in pursuit of 342 runs for victory.

"We have the tendency of squandering our chances," said West Indies skipper Carl Hooper.

"We had our chances in the match but we failed to exploit them. We let off Rashid Latif early and he went on to score 150 at a stage when Pakistan were 94 for 4 in the first innings," said the all-rounder.

"We hope that they send a world class bowler as replacement," said Hooper.

The mood in the Pakistan camp was high.

"We have no injury worries and we expect to field the same team as in the first test," said skipper Waqar Younis, who learned his cricket in Sharjah before going back to his native Pakistan.

"However, we will be deciding later whether to include Shahid Afridi in our side," said the fast bowler.

Afridi, who owns the record for the fastest one-day century and is a useful spinner, could replace either of the young openers, Taufeeq Umer or Navid Latif, who both failed in the first test. Both captains also hoped the pitch will stay good for the five days.

Pakistan and West Indies are playing at this neutral venue as the Caribbean team had refused to tour the Asian nation due to political tensions there.
