![]() Stage 12: Friday, July 24 - 138 miles Posted: Friday, July 10, 1998 Friday July 24 - The Tour reaches the Mediterranean coast via the Cevenne region after leaving another pre-history site, Tarascon-sur-Ariege, for a 222-km race to Le Cap d'Agde whose beach was originally a harbour founded by the Phoenicians.
Dominated by limestone cliffs, in the heart of the Ariège valley, Tarascon-on-Ariège is one of the centers of speleology and prehistory. This ancient city of iron and aluminum has preserved the traces of its medieval past.
Agde was a very prosperous port, founded by the Phocéens 25 centuries ago. Forced to retreat inland by the Alluvions, remarkable vestiges of an opulent past are visible. Its beach, the Cape of Agde, originate from the lava of the volcano, Mont Saint Loup.
