  Stage 13: Saturday, July 25 - 122 miles Posted: Friday, July 10, 1998 Saturday July 25 - Carpentras, the conclusion for stage 13, was the finish point that British rider Tom Simpson was aiming for when he collapsed and died on the Ventoux mountain in 1967. The 196-km leg through Provence starts from Frontignan la Peyrade.
Known for its muscatel, this pleasant summer resort expresses its energy through its numerous folkloric shows. The city posses remarkable vestiges such as the Saint Paul church, a fortress from the 12th century.
A Roman colony, controlled by the popes during more than five centuries, famous for its truffle market. Carpentras benefits from a beautiful environment and an interesting cultural heritage, with a 17th century Episcopal palace transformed into Law courts.
