![]() Stage 21: Sunday, August 2 - 91 miles Posted: Friday, July 10, 1998 Sunday August 2 - Melun sets the Tour off on its 147-km ride to a Champs Elysees finale. Among those seeing it off from Melun will be its mayor Jacques Marinelli who finished third in the 1949 Tour after holding the yellow jersey for five days.
As in 1991 Melun will be the start for the final stage and the host for the third time of the Tour de France caravan. A welcoming city Melun is also known for its flowers and architecture with it's Napoleon III style city hall where stands a statue of French humanist Jacques Amyot, born in Melun in 1513.
The 230-foot wide (71-m) Avenue des Champs Elysées, is not the largest artery of the French capital, but it is undoubtedly the most prestigious one. The avenue remains a privileged business district with its luxury shops, entertainment centers and its galleries. Final finish line for the Tour de France since 1975, L'avenue des Champs-Elysées offers each year a unique event site.
