![]() Stage 9: Monday, July 20 - 130 miles Posted: Friday, July 10, 1998 Monday July 20 - The Pau finish has happy links with Ireland. Sean Kelly (1982) and Martin Earley, seven years later, joined an illustrious band including Fausto Coppi and Bernard Hinault who have won at this threshold to the Pyrenees. The stage is over 210 kms from Montauban.
The Quays of Villebourbon and the quarter of the same name, extend the long of the left bank of the Tarn river. The armies of Louis XIII tried to make their strategical headquarters in Montauban in 1621 without success.
The elegant castle of Pau situated at the foot of the Pyrenees was transformed into a Renaissance palace, then renovated under Louis Philippe and Napoleon III. The king Henri IV was born in the castle in December 13, 1553.
