MONTAUBAN, France (Reuters) -- Laurent Desbiens of France took over as Tour de France leader on Sunday after finishing the eighth stage seven minutes 45 seconds ahead of overnight leader Jan Ullrich.

Desbiens was fifth in a six-man sprint won by compatriot Jacky Durand -- the first French victory in this Tour after a 190.5-km leg from Brive.

Germany's Ullrich, the favorite for a second Tour triumph, is now three minutes 21 seconds adrift.

Durand outsprinted Italians Andrea Tafi and third-placed Fabio Sacchi after their group had led for 116 kilometers.

Desbiens has a lead of 14 seconds on Tafi with Durand third 43 seconds in arrears.
