PLATEAU DE BEILLE, France, July 22 (Reuters)- Spain's Abraham Olano, one of the pre-race favourites, abandoned the Tour de France halfway through the 170-km 11th stage on Wednesday.

Olano, who was sixth overall three minutes 11 seconds behind German Jan Ullrich, stopped at the feeding station of this mountain stage between Luchon and the Plateau de Beille.

"He was suffering more and more with each kilometre and we decided to stop him," said Banesto team director Eusebio Unzue.

Former road world champion Olano was fourth in the Tour last year after winning the last time trial in Eurodisney.
