Marco Pantani won the Tour de France for the first time AP

PARIS (CNN/SI) -- Marco Pantani of Italy became the first Italian in 33 years to win the Tour de France on Sunday.

Tom Steels of Belgium won the final stage of 147.5 kilometers (91-miles) from Melun to Paris.

Pantani's rare double -- he won the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) earlier this year -- has been marred by the drug scandal surrounding this year's tour.
