Stage 16: Wednesday, July 21 - 192 km (119 miles)

Lannemezan Pau
(Societe du Tour de France) (Societe du Tour de France)

Built on a plateau leading up to the Pyrenees and near the fresh-water source of the Gers, Lannemezan is known as the crossroads of the central Pyrenees region. The town grew in importance in the 19th century thanks to its central location along the Toulouse-Bayonne railroad line. Today Lannemezan is most known for its fairs and markets which date back to the 16th century.

Capital of the Béarn region, Pau is ideally placed at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. It was the birthplace of King Henry IV and Bernadotte, King of Sweeden. Since the 19th century, Pau has been a hot-spot for the English, and more recently a center for golfing. But since 1903, this city has also been one of the most-frequently visited cities of the Tour de France.
