![]() Born in the 14th century around a Moorish Abby, this town, sitting on the outskirts of Pau, really gained attention when they began producing Lacq petrol in 1957. But Mourenx had to wait until 1969 to gain Tour de France notoriety. And it came thanks to a superb victory here by Eddy Merckx. Capital of Aquitaine and Guyenne and the major port of the Gironde river, the 2000-year-old town of Bordeaux is universally known for its wine. Victor Hugo described it perfectly when he said, "Bordeaux is a mix of Versailles and Anvers." And since 1903, this southern city has been one of the most visited cities of the Tour de France.
