Driver charged in boy's death
NICE, France (CNNSI.com) -- The driver of the car that killed a 12-year-old boy at the Tour de France will be charged with manslaughter, judicial sources said on Wednesday. The boy died on July 16 from head injuries sustained when he was hit by a car overtaking the publicity caravan during Stage 13. The boy, who was French, was flown to a Marseille, France, hospital, but fell into a coma and never recovered consciousness. His mother was also injured in the accident. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, is set to appear in court in September. Judicial sources said the driver will also face charges of causing bodily harm and losing control of his vehicle. Tour director Jean-Marie Leblanc said the death had "ruined" the event. Riders observed a minute's silence on July 18 as a mark of respect. It was the first fatal accident involving a spectator at the Tour de France since 1988.
