Stage 10: Monday, July 10
205-kilometer stage from Dax to Lourdes-Hautacam

Winner
Javier Ochoa
Italy
6:09:32
Kelme

Race Leader
Lance Armstrong
United States
39:24:30
U.S. Postal

Summary:
While sprinters dominated the early stages of the Tour de France, defending champion Lance Armstrong said he was resting for the mountains. He wasn't lying. In what may prove to be one of the most epic days of this year's tour, Armstrong braved hellacious weather and made a brilliant late climb to take the overall lead. He finished second in the stage behind Spain's Javier Ochoa. Armstrong began the day in 16th place, but now leads Jan Ullrich of Germany by more than four minutes.

Dax  Lourdes-Hautacam
(Societe du Tour de France) (Societe du Tour de France)

Lying close both to the Atlantic Ocean and to the Pyrenées, this southern town is France's foremost thermal spa, drawing more than 50,000 visitors a year. Dax is also prized for its cuisine (foie gras) and bullfights: 60,000 aficionados flock here during the August feria and the September Toros y Salsa festival.

Sporting facilities abound in the Dax area, and the local rugby club has provided through the years some of France's star players.

Five million pilgrims flock each year to this small Pyrenean town. Hautacam ski resort, where Dane Bjarn Riis laid the groundwork for his victory in the 1996 Tour, is located not far away.
