Summary:
Sitting pretty: All flashbulbs and spotlights are aimed at Lance Armstrong as he rolls on to an almost-certain Tour de France victory. On Thursday, however, the 28-year-old kept a low profile, finishing in 34th place and avoiding some of the glare. Italian Salvatore Commesso won Stage 18, outdueling four other sprinters in a dramatic finish. Meanwhile, Armstrong maintained his five-minute, 37-second lead over second-placed Jan Ullrich of Germany.

Stage 18 description:

Lausanne  Fribourg-en-Brisgau
(Societe du Tour de France) (Societe du Tour de France)

World sporting capital Lausanne is home to the IOC headquarters, the Olympic Museum (where an exhibit on the Tour will be on show), as well as the headquarters of more than a dozen international sporting federations. Though a busy economic and financial center, Lausanne is one of Europe's most pleasant cities to live in.

UCI, the body ruling international cycling, is based in Lausanne, and 2000 is its centennial year. Lausanne is a regular venue for world championships in many other sports, such as ice skating, and every year it holds one of the most prestigious track and field meetings.

Fribourg is both a buoyant city open to the modern world and the most charming and romantic hamlet. The old town, around the cathedral, which towers over the town, is most endearing with its quaint side streets and lovely streams.
