Riders in the Tour of Italy will pay special tribute to Pope John Paul II AP

ROME (AP) -- Italy's leading cycling race will mark the new millennium in a special way.

Organizers announced Tuesday that the first leg of the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) in the year 2000 will be dedicated to the city of Rome and the Vatican's Holy Year.

The leg will be raced on May 13, concluding in St. Peter's Square with the racers and officials to pay homage to the pope, it was reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the sports daily that organizes the cycling classic.
