BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters) -- Peter van Petegem outsprinted two other Belgian riders to win the Tour of Flanders World Cup cycling race on Sunday.

"The Tour of Flanders was my goal for this season. Winning it makes me happy for the rest of my life," pre-race favorite Van Petegem, who rides for the Dutch TVM outfit said.

"It couldn't have been a nicer sprint, we started it alongside each other," said Van Petegem.

Van Petegem and three-time winner Johan Museeuw broke clear at the start of the steep Wall of Geraardsbergen, the penultimate climb in a series of 16, after Swiss Markus Zberg skidded away on a sharp bend and blocked the riders' path.

Frank Vandenbroucke closed the gap with the two leaders on the final climb 12 kilometers from the line but paid dearly for the effort during the sprint finish in which he was easily kept at bay by Van Petegem.
