Lance Armstrong Lance Armstrong has been expected to compete for the U.S. in the road race at the Sydney Olympics. AP

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (AP) -- Lance Armstrong plans to defend his title in the Tour de France this summer despite sustaining a concussion during a crash.

Armstrong fell Friday while training in the Pyrenees Mountains of France. He missed a turn when his front tire hit a sharp rock in the road, causing a blowout.

Since being hospitalized overnight for observation, Armstrong has been resting at his training home in Nice.

"These things happen," said Dan Osipow, spokesman for Armstrong's United States Postal Service pro cycling team.

It's not known how long Armstrong will be out before resuming training, but he won't compete in his next scheduled event, the Midi Libre stage race in France May 16-21.

"We'll take it week-to-week, even day-to-day," Osipow said.

He said Armstrong was in good spirits and eager to race in the Tour de France, which begins July 1.

"The Tour de France is his big goal of the year, and the team's big goal," Osipow said. "Every week, every month is tailored for Lance to be peaking July 1."

Armstrong was going very fast downhill when he went down. Osipow didn't know if Armstrong was wearing a helmet.

Armstrong, of Austin, Texas, has been training and competing in Nice leading up to the Tour de France. His victory in the race last year capped a remarkable comeback from testicular cancer.

He expects to compete for the United States in the road race at the Sydney Olympics, and Osipow said the injury should not affect those plans.

"After the Tour, he'll recover for Sydney," Osipow said. "It's a big goal for him."
