MADRID, Spain (AP) -- Spanish cyclist Roberto Heras won the Tour of Spain Sunday with a 2-minute and 33-second lead over Angel Casero, despite coming in ninth in the final stage.

The 38.6-kilometer (23-mile) time trial around Madrid narrowed Heras' lead of 4 minutes and 26 seconds that he had held after winning Saturday's 20th stage.

In third overall was Russia's Pavel Tonkov at 4 minutes and 55 seconds behind Heras.

Spaniard Santos Gonzalez won the 38.6-kilometer (23-mile) time trial around Madrid, the last leg of the 21-leg tour Sunday, clocking 45 minutes and 26 seconds, a full six seconds ahead of Casero who came in second.

Third in the time trial was Spaniard Abraham Olano, at 1 minute and 1 second behind the leader.

Gonzalez also placed fourth in the overall Tour standings at 5 minutes and 52 seconds behind Heras.

Tour winner Heras came ninth in the final stage, 1 minute and 59 seconds behind Gonzalez.
