KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Paolo Lanfranchi claimed the top spot in Thursday's ninth stage of the Le Tour de Langkawi.

The 31-year old Italian, riding for the world's top-ranked team of Mapei Quickstep, won the 132 kilometer (81.84 miles), mostly uphill race.

Paolo Bertoglio of the rival Italian outfit Ceramiche Panaria Fiordo and Lanfranchi's teammate, Paolo Bettini, came in second and third respectively.

Lanfranchi completed the gruelling race in 3 hours 30 minutes and 34 seconds, 49 seconds ahead of Bertoglio and 1 minute 35 seconds in front of Bettini.

The result gives Lanfranchi and his team the top spots in the overall standings ahead of Friday's stage.
