An erratic season this year, coupled with very little actual racing (19 days when we went to press) make it very hard to predict exactly what Santiago Botero could get up to in the Tour.

Having said that, when the fair-haired Colombian is on form, he’s got exactly what it takes both for time trials -- as his 40-second margin over Armstrong in the Dauphiné TT showed -- and in the mountains, as witnessed when he won the epic Alpine stage to Briançon in 2000.

While keeping a level head about Kelme’s financial problems, Botero’s victory in the Classique des Alpes, where he crossed the line just ahead of teammate Sevilla, showed he had lost none of his climbing prowess.

If his form is just a little bit steadier than it was in the Dauphiné, he could form a very dangerous duo with Sevilla.
