Like Jalabert, Dekker is a wily veteran who took a hat-trick of stages in 2000 by every means devisable -- long breaks, two- up moves and late lunges -- without ever sprinting.

Small wonder they gave him the most aggressive rider ’s award.

Last year Dekker was limited by his World Cup aspirations, although he still won the famous stage into Pontarlier.

After his 2002 spring campaign was ruined by a serious hip injury in Milan-San Remo, Dekker is itching to show once more why they nicknamed him the Flying Dutchman.
