Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 7:25 AM
Cycling Weekly profiles the contenders for the Tour de France overall winner's yellow jersey. Fifth in his Tour de France debut last year, Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano has been firmly kept under wraps by team manager Manolo Saiz this season. Still,he succeeded in beating Lance Armstrong in the time trial at the Midi Libre -- where he finished second overall -- and then went on to take the Tour of Germany. His form is said to be so good that Saiz refused to let him race the Tour of Catalonia, where he finished second last year. Second in the prologue of the 2001 Tour and in the final time trial -- ahead of Jan Ullrich -- showed Gonzalez de Galdeano, who came second in the 1999 Tour of Spain, had not lost his capability to handle the big three-week events. Saiz aims to have him in yellow after the team time trial. From then on, anything could happen.
