Roberto Heras Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 7:53 AMCycling Weekly profiles the contenders for the Tour de France overall winner's yellow jersey.
Up until a couple of weeks ago, you’d have been justified in asking “Roberto Who?”, given the Spanish climber’s below-par season last year (fourth in the Vuelta, and no wins). However, that all changed when Heras blew the field apart in the Tour of Catalonia, Spain’s last big stage race before the Tour de France. Even though half a day’s climbing was called off because of a general strike, Heras was totally in control on the Pyrenean climbs. For the first time in 18 months he looked like the rider who cruised to victory in the 2000 Vuelta again. Once described by Johan Bruyneel as “one of the top three climbers in the world ” -- even though he ’ll be 100 percent dedicated to looking after Armstrong in the Tour -- if he’s back on song Heras more than capable of finishing in the top 10 himself as well.
