Levi Leipheimer Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 7:42 AMCycling Weekly profiles the contenders for the Tour de France overall winner's yellow jersey.
Colorado-born Leipheimer moved up a total of 316 UCI placings last year into the top 20 overall, thanks to his third place in the Vuelta -- the best result for an American ever in the Spanish stage race. Signed in December from US Postal by Dutch team Rabobank as their Tour GC man, Leipheimer has prepared quietly but thoroughly for his Tour debut, checking out the Ventoux and Alpine stages with teammate Michael Boogerd, and he has barely been seen racing all spring. However, sources at Rabobank claim he is in stunning condition and more than ready to try to come as close as possible to his former leader Armstrong. The 28 year old says he’ll be satisfied with just doing the best he can: don’t be surprised if doing just that puts him inside the top 10.
