O’Grady ’s five-day spell in yellow last year was followed by more than a fortnight in green, but on the run-in to the Champs-Élysées Erik Zabel wrested it back from the Adelaide-born pro.

A complicated spring caused by an iliac artery operation was followed by rapidly improving form in the Route du Sud, where he was in a day-long break on stage one.

O’Grady was also Zabel ’s closest competitor in 1999, but was forced to quit in 2000 after a first-week crash left him with a broken collarbone.
