ONCE-Eroski Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 11:37 AMCycling Weekly magazine profiles the teams racing to Paris in this year's Tour de France.
After finishing a deserved third in 2001, Joseba Beloki could be the only real threat to Armstrong this year. The 29-year-old Spaniard is at the peak of his career and should lose less time to Armstrong in both the time trials and big mountain stages this year. Igor Gonzalez de Galdeano and Marcos Serrano finished fifth and ninth last year and ONCE were also second in the team time trial, which means Beloki has a solid team to back him up. With Manolo Saiz in the ONCE team car and plenty of Spanish allies in the peloton, ONCE will be giving it every- thing to try to topple Armstrong. Other riders who will be wearing the pink ONCE jersey at the Tour include talented German Jörg Jaksche, Rafael Diaz and Jose Azevedo. Veteran Abraham Olano could be a late entry to give the team a boost in the team time trial.
