Oscar Sevilla Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 7:13 AMUpdated: Wednesday July 10, 2002 7:13 AM
Cycling Weekly profiles the contenders for the Tour de France overall winner's yellow jersey. While Armstrong has never been beaten in a single long time trial in the Tour de France in the last three years,on three or four occasions in the Alps and Pyrenees he’s been content to let the climbers charge up the road. That strategy is not going to lose him the Tour, of course, but there might just come a day in 2002 when he has to let a climber or two off the leash. When it comes to strong rides in the mountains, and being able to time trial at least a little, don’t be fooled by Oscar Sevilla ’s looks, which have meant he’s been refused entrance to his fair share of discotheques. For all he looks like a 12-year-old, the rider they nicknamed "The Kid" has already led a major Tour —- the Vuelta last year —- and his Tour debut in 2001,where he finished an impressive seventh, had foreign teams waving wads of euros at him. But, for better or for worse, Sevilla had already signed for Kelme- Costa Blanca -- which recently ran into cash-flow problems -- until December 2003. Nevertheless,we could still be in for some explosive displays of climbing from the 25-year-old (yes, that’s how old he really is)not to mention a place on the podium.
