Richard Virenque Posted: Wednesday July 10, 2002 7:53 AMCycling Weekly profiles the contenders for the Tour de France overall winner's yellow jersey.
For all "Tricky Dicky" is probably too far on the wrong side of 30 to have a big impact on the overall, not to mention his murky past, Virenque is still a gutsy pro -- his long lone break to victory in last year’s Paris-Tours was the high point of the season for many cycling fans -- and he has at least one big ride in the Tour mountains in his legs. A weak team -- since when have Domo-Farm Frites really been a factor in the Tour de France? -- and creeping Father Time could well hold him back, but he was just coming into seriously good form in the Dauphiné Libéré and he has been training hard. Love him or loathe him, Virenque is not a rider who should be underestimated, as the peloton did in Paris-Tours last year, and lived to regret it.
