Cofidis Posted: Thursday July 11, 2002 5:29 AMCycling Weekly magazine profiles the teams racing to Paris in this year's Tour de France.
Cofidis have three interesting Tour riders in David Millar, David Moncoutié and Andrei Kivilev but it is hard to believe that any of them have a chance of a high overall placing. Kivilev is designated team leader after finishing fourth last year but that result was due to being part of the rain-soaked stage eight break which finished seven minutes ahead of the bunch. He finished fifth at the Dauphiné Libéré and looked good on the Joux Plane with Armstrong but the Tour is a much, much bigger race. Moncoutié is one of the most liked riders in the French media but he has rarely confirmed his talent and seems to live in his own little world. Millar will be the only British rider at the Tour this year and will hope to win the prologue, just as he did in 2000. He has been working on his climbing and also aims to have a solid Tour as preparation for a future overall challenge. The risk is that he may have improved his climbing at the cost of damaging his TT ability. The other riders in the Cofidis team are: Janek Tombak, Inigo Cuesta, Bingen Fernandez, Cédric Vasseur, plus Italians Massimiliano Lelli and Guido Trentin.
