ibanesto.com Posted: Thursday July 11, 2002 6:42 AMCycling Weekly magazine profiles the teams racing to Paris in this year's Tour de France.
Ibanesto.com’s Jose-Maria Jimenez is still off the bike and the need to save Juan Miguel Mercado for the Vuelta means ibanesto.com are relying on Russian Denis Menchov to lead the team. Winner of the Tour de l’Avenir in 2001, Menchov is only 24 but won the Mont Ventoux stage at the Dauphiné Libéré and also rode well at the Midi-Libre. Last year he finished 47th in the Tour, 1:31.50 behind Lance Armstrong. This year he could be much closer. Menchov will have Unai Osa -- third overall at the 2001 Giro -- and Francisco Mancebo to help in the mountains. Surprisingly, ibanesto.com have left Italians Leonardo Piepoli and Marzio Bruseghin at home, picking Jose Garcia Acosta, Jose Gutierrez, Jon Odriozola, Unai Osa and Javier Pascual.
