Simoni cleared by commission

ROME (AP) -- The Italian cycling federation on Saturday cleared former Giro d'Italia champion Gilberto Simoni of taking doping substances and immediately lifted his suspension from racing.

Raffaele Gallus, the disciplinary commission chairman who discussed Simoni's case, said the Italian rider tested positive for cocaine metabolites following the "unaware taking" of candies containing the forbidden substance.

As a result the commission decided Simoni's "acquittal" in line with the decision of Trento prosecutor Bruno Giardina to give up any action against the Italian cyclist, the captain of the Saeco team.

The candies, which according to the experts reports contained small amounts of cocaine, had been given to Simoni by a relative.

Simoni, winner of the 2001 edition of the Giro, had been kicked out of the Italian race last May after testing positive for cocaine metabolites twice.

Trento prosecutor had began an investigation into his case while the sport authority decided Simoni's suspension pending a final decision by the disciplinary commission.

Simoni always denied any wrongdoing.
