VILNIUS (Reuters) -- Lithuanian rider Raimondas Rumsas, whose wife is being held in a French jail after performance-enhancing drugs were found in her car, has tested negative, Lithuanian sports authorities said Tuesday.

"The Lithuanian cyclist's test result is negative, which means he did not use any forbidden substances," an umbrella group of Lithuanian sports organizations said in a statement.

After Rumsas had finished third in the Tour de France, his wife Edita was taken into custody by French police.

The group, which includes the Lithuanian government's sports department and the National Olympic Committee, helped organise a drugs test last week for Rumsas in neighboring Latvia.

The test was sent to the Huddinge laboratory in Sweden and also to the Kreischa laboratory in Germany for examination.

Tuesday's announcement was based on a statement from the Latvian anti-doping commission, which received the results from Huddinge.

"As the Lithuanian working group co-ordinator Rima Berloviene said, the probability that test results from the Kraish laboratory in Germany will be different is equal to zero," the group's statement added.

Vandenbroucke's doping suspension confirmed

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Regional authorities Tuesday confirmed a doping suspension of Belgian cyclist Frank Vandenbroucke, ruling him out of the World Championships in October.

The Flemish government's disciplinary commission rejected an appeal of the 27-year old cyclist and barred him from competitive cycling in the region of Flanders in northern Belgium for six months. Another 12 months of the ban are suspended.

The ban only covers Flanders and Vandenbroucke was entered in the Ain Tour in France, which started Tuesday.

The road world championships are held in Flanders' Zolder on Oct 13.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned a six-month doping suspension slapped on Vanderbroucke by the Belgian cycling federation on June 25. The Flemish regional authorities imposed their own ban later.

The ban was imposed after a police raid found banned drugs at his home.

In 1998, Vandenbroucke won the Paris-Nice one-week classic through France. His best season came a year later, when he won eight races, including the World Cup classic Liege-Bastogne-Liege and two stages in the Spanish Vuelta. He finished the year as the third best rider in the UCI standings.

Barbosa disqualified in Portugal

ELVAS, Portugal (Reuters) -- Joan Horrach of Spain won the 174.1 km 11th stage of the Tour of Portugal on Tuesday in a sprint finish but only after the disqualification of Candido Barbosa who crossed the line first.

Tour judges ruled that the Portuguese's sprint to the line had been "irregular."

Television replays showed Barbosa had veered to his right and blocked Horrach in the final meters.

Horrach retained his overall Tour lead after winning in three hours 57 minutes 44 seconds. The Spaniard also took the fifth stage last week.

Horrach's teammate Claus Moller of Denmark, eighth in Tuesday's bunch finish, remains in second place overall, 48 seconds down.

Wednesday's 12th stage is mostly flat over 167.9 km from Elvas to Beja in the heart of Portugal's sun-scorched southern Alentejo region.

The 2,000-km Tour finishes on the outskirts of Lisbon on Thursday with a 23.9 km time-trial.
