ST ETIENNE, France (Reuters) -- Italian Davide Rebellin won the second stage of the Paris-Nice cycle race Tuesday and earned the leader's yellow jersey.

The pack led by compatriot and 2001 champion Dario Frigo raced away on the Croix de Chaubouret climb and Rebellin sprinted to the finish just ahead of last year's winner Alexander Vinokurov of Kazakhstan.

Russian Alexander Bocharov was third and Frigo had to be content with fourth place.

"I don't often win races," Rebellin of the Gerolsteiner team said afterwards. "I'm just very happy to have done so this time with Dario Frigo being so strong.

"I'm not thinking of the next stages. I just want to savour the moment," Rebellin added.

Vinokurov, who first settled in St Etienne after arriving from Kazakhstan was unhappy to have failed to win once again in his adopted city.

He finished third here during the 1999 Tour de France and second in the Paris-Nice in 2000.

The race finishes on Sunday.
