TV ratings for Tour hold steady

NEW YORK (AP) -- The ratings for CBS' coverage of Lance Armstrong's record-tying fifth straight Tour de France victory Sunday were down slightly from last year.

The network's coverage of Armstrong's victorious march through Paris garnered a 2.4 overnight rating with a 6 share as compared to a 2.5 with a 6 share in 2002. The final stage of the 100th running of the Tour was shown tape-delayed from 2-3 p.m.

CBS televised an hour of the Tour every Sunday during the three-week race. The average overnight rating for the network's three hours of coverage was 2.0 with a 5 share, up slightly from last year's 1.9 with a 5 share.

Armstrong beat Jan Ullrich by 61 seconds in the 23-day, 2,125-mile race, to join Miguel Indurain as the only two men to ever win cycling's most prestigious event five consecutive times.

Overnight ratings measure the 55 largest TV markets in the United States, covering nearly 70 percent of the country. Each overnight rating point represents about 735,000 TV homes. The share is the percentage watching a program among those households with televisions on at the time.
