Armstrong takes to streets in Denmark Posted: Thursday July 31, 2003 9:07 AMUpdated: Thursday July 31, 2003 7:07 PM COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) -- Lance Armstrong rode his second race Thursday since winning his record-tying fifth straight Tour de France last weekend. But he finished in a modest seventh place in the street race in the small Danish town of Hadsten. Earlier this week he won a race in Austria, and he's scheduled to race another on Saturday in Karlsruhe, Germany. After that, he will take time off with his family before ending the season on Sept. 14 with a race in San Francisco. Armstrong, from Austin, Texas, was the clear favorite to win the Danish race since most of his 71 rivals were local amateurs. But it was one of the local professionals, Jakob Moe Rasmussen, who took the victory nine seconds in front of Armstrong. "It was a tough race. The local guys were flying. I guess they had special motivation," said a smiling Armstrong after the race. Moe Rasmussen took a joking approach to his victory: "It shows that I would have won Tour de France this year if I had participated." Armstrong drew 10,000 spectators to the race in the streets of Hadsten, 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of capital Copenhagen. Contestants rode for an hour plus four rounds of a 1,400 meter (1,540 yard) stretch. Previous years' winners of the Hadsten street race include former Danish Tour de France winner Bjarne Riis and American Tyler Hamilton who finished fourth in this year's Tour despite a broken collarbone.
