Texas football coach Mack Brown joined the show to talk about the upcoming season and more. Here are some of his takes ...
-- Brown talked about Vince Young not winning the Heisman over Reggie Bush in 2005. He thinks that if Bush vacates the award because of NCAA infractions, Young should get it.
"I think you have to go back and really give that choice to the Heisman Trust," Brown said. "If they take it away I think Vince should be awarded the trophy. Matt Leinart was the only other one in the running at that time. Matt had already won a Heisman. Vince was second in the voting. So even if they re-voted I would like to see Vince get it. But at this point it’s irrelevant simply because the Heisman Trust has not chosen to take it away.
-- Brown said the Heisman officials told him that they don't want to delay the vote for the winner because it would be inconsistent with all the winners of the past. If they started changing it now, then it would be unfair to other players who would have won if they had waited for the bowls to play out.
-- Brown talked about the national title game win over USC. He said USC was in a tough spot because all the experts said they were so good, and no one knew how good Texas was. "They were as good as advertised. We weren't getting enough credit." And Brown told a funny story about how he hoped a designed pass play actually broke down to a V.Y. running play.
-- Brown said he talks to Colt McCoy all the time. "I think he's doing well," Brown said. "He understood he'd be the third quarterback. He understood he won't play this year. He doesn't get reps during practice. You're thrown into a preseason game without a game plan. ... It makes it very difficult for those young quarterbacks."
-- Brown said he's still happy coaching and the succession plan with Will Muschamp is still in place. "[Muschamp]'s happy. He's 38. ... He's not in a big hurry. He's the highest paid defensive coordinator in the country."
-- Brown said he tries to wear all orange all the time and would never drive a red car. "I don't even have green or red for Christmas," Brown said. |
