Matthew Mitcham won the gold diving off the 10m platform in Beijing.
According to Outsports.com, Australian diver Matthew Mitcham was the first openly gay athlete to win a gold medal and NBC shirked its duty by completely ignoring his sexual orientation.
Outsports.com editor Cyd Ziegler brought up several interesting points with Dan. NBC said that as a policy, it doesn't discuss athletes' sexual orientation. But Ziegler says every time the camera flashes to a wife, husband, girlfriend or boyfriend, that's exactly what they're doing.
Dan asked Ziegler exactly what NBC should have said when Mitcham won the gold on the 10-meter platform. All Ziegler wanted was a passing mention to his partner, who was in the stands. After he won the medal -- which apparently was a big upset -- the broadcasters could have easily mentioned his partner, but they didn't.
Dan and the guys had a very interesting argument over this. Did NBC have an obligation to cover his sexual identity? Was it news in this case?
Seton compared this story to that of a black quarterback in the NFL. Should it be a story if a quarterback is black? Probably not in this day and age. Should it be a story if an athlete is gay? What do you guys think?
