Barack Obama's comments on the BCS has started a national debate on college football playoffs.

Washington Post columnist and PTI host Michael Wilbon dropped by the show on his birthday. Here are the highlights from his discussion with Dan:

-- Michael Wilbon says that Barack Obama's comments on college football playoffs will push this agenda forward and could result in a playoff system. Wilbon thinks that's exactly what was needed to nudge the colleges to act.

-- Wilbon said that former ESPN chief Mark Shapiro brought a playoff plan to college football a few years ago, but was shot down.

-- Wilbon brought up a good point. The colleges can't say that they're not responsible for entertainment and academics come first, because almost all of their other sports are determined by playoffs.

-- Dan and Wilbon discussed the travel issues with a playoff system. They both agree a lot of fans won't be able to afford to travel three weeks in a row. But Wilbon thinks local fans will come out no matter what teams are in it, just because it's a meaningful game.

-- Wilbon thinks the NBA and college basketball should require players stay two years. Wilbon thinks that college hoops was much better last year with Derrick Rose and all the great freshman. He thinks it'd be even better with two years. And the NBA certainly benefits by guys like Rose getting a year apprenticeship.

-- Wilbon thinks that many of the great NBA players were aided tremendously by going to college -- Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, etc.
