Hall of Famer Jim Brown joined the show to talk about the state of sports. Here are some of his takes:
-- Brown thinks college football should adopt the NFL's "Rooney Rule." In the pros, the Rooney Rule allows teams to find out information about candidates they normally would not get to know. In college football, that doesn't happen.
"There is no way an African-American coach is going to have a real opportunity because that information is not being given to those schools," Brown said.
-- Dan asked Brown if he can understand why LeBron James might want to leave Cleveland. Brown said that James should be careful. He might get what he is asking for. More money won't necessarily make him happy. Quality of life is also very important. The love people have for him will last much longer than the money.
-- Jim and Dan also got into the issues surrounding college recruiting. Brown said he was a lost child in high school. He didn't have a father and his mother didn't understand the system. Ohio State was in the picture, but a high school coach guided him to Syracuse.
Brown said there was no "hanky-panky" back then when it came to recruiting. Brown said a college education was a big deal to student-athletes back then and there wasn't as much money around the sport.
-- On this date, O.J. Simpson passed Brown's single-season rushing record. Brown said, "I was never a fan of O.J." Brown hasn't talked to him since the murder trial. Brown thinks Simpson was guilty.
-- Brown says great players don't give a hoot about the Hall of Fame. Brown said his good friend Bill Russell doesn't care. It's the decision of a panel and it doesn't validate anything. |
