Jacksonville RB Maurice Jones-Drew joined Dan to discuss the Jags, Fred Taylor's departure and whether he'd take a discount to help a teammate get more money.
-Jones-Drew is calling in from Egypt (which Dan doesn't believe), where he is training by running the pyramids. There aren't a lot of Jags fans there as most people don't know the NFL from the NRA.
-DP says that he is underpaid (he’s scheduled to earn only $535,000 in 2009) and when Dan proposed that he is close to a contract that will pay him close to $20 million, MJD says he has no idea and he's leaving it up to his agent. Dan suggests he is using Stephen Jackson's contract as a barometer, but Jones-Drew isn't allowed to speak on the issue
-Would MJD take less money to assure that a teammate stayed with the team? Jones-Drew says yes if he was Kurt Warner who has already been paid throughout his career. He compares his salary to eating at Subway and he's hoping to upgrade to McDonald's.
-MJD calls himself the best RB in football. He thinks he's better than Adrian Peterson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Stephen Jackson. MJD clarifies by saying that all RBs are good and it's tough to compare one to another since the position is so broad, but he thinks he's among the best.
-He wouldn't be upset if the Jags drafted another running back because that's the business and he was once that draft pick when Taylor was the man for the Jags. Either way, it all comes down to winning games and if drafting a RB helps, he wouldn't be opposed to it.
-Jones-Drew is not yet engaged, but he's thinking about it. Dan cautions him that once the money comes, the girls will come flocking. MJD insists that his girl has been with him since the start and isn't all about the money. |
