NBC's Tony Dungy joined the show to discuss big issues around the NFL. Here are some of his takes:
-- Dungy thought Rush Limbaugh should have had the opportunity to go through the whole process of applying to buy an NFL team.
Dungy said that the owners of the teams should have been able to vote on Limbaugh's bid. Not the general public.
Dungy said judging potential owners on external things can be very dangerous. It takes a more thorough process.
"We don't have any minority ownership in the NFL right now, Dungy said. "It's the same thing."
-- Dan asked Dungy about rumors he could join the Bucs or another team in an advisory role. "I really don't have an interest joining them or any other football team," Dungy said.
Dungy said he loves NBC's Football Night in America and how could he leave a job where he gets to work with Dan Patrick.
"Right now I have no plans to come back, so I try to ignore those rumors," Dungy said.
-- Dungy said that he did talk to Oregon's LeGarrette Blount. "I talked to LeGarrette on the telephone really as a request of Coach [Chip] Kelly," Dungy said.
-- Dungy explained his theory on building a team. He doesn't always like signing the big free agent. He looked at the Giants. They lost Plaxico Burress, and didn't go out and sign a big name. They looked at the guys they had and that's worked out well so far.
-- Dungy said that he was recruited by Notre Dame and had no interest in going there before he got there. But then he was very impressed. Dungy wanted to go to Michigan State, then the Spartans coach retired and his assistant went to Minnesota and got Dungy to go there.
But Dungy was very clear, he did not cry while watching the movie Rudy. Instead, he analyzed the football. "That's how I looked at the movie, from a coach's perspective. I would have loved to have Rudy on my team." |
