Cincinnati head football coach Brian Kelly joined the show to discuss the Bearcats possibly being left out of the BCS national championship game picture even if they end the regular season without a loss and his future.
Dan asked Kelly why he thinks he's being mentioned for the Notre Dame job. "Probably just profile," Kelly said. Kelly said it's partly because he's "East coast Irish Catholic."
Dan asked Kelly why he hasn't commented one way or the other on Notre Dame. "I've always stayed away from that," Kelly said. "Why paint yourself into a corner. Do the best with what you have. Last I checked, that job wasn't open anyway."
Kelly said that one potential downside of joining Notre Dame is everything else that comes along with the show. "Obviously I have great deal of respect for Notre Dame and what they’ve accomplished and the mission of their academics, the student-athletes, and things of that nature. But you know there’s obviously other things attached to it as well.
"You know, my family loves it here. They love Cincinnati. Do you want to be a public figure? Really, it’s like being the governor. When you’re the head coach at Notre Dame, you’re gonna have everything out on the line and you know I’ve got a young family so those are all things you have to consider.”
Kelly also had interesting comments on the BCS. Kelly said he understands if more than two teams finish undefeated, someone will get left out. Kelly said his point is that if there's only one undefeated major conference team, either Cincinnati, TCU or Boise State deserves a shot at the national title game.
Kelly said that bowl games are important because of the revenue, so he wants to keep them. But Kelly said there is time in the year to fit in playoffs.
Kelly also commented on his team's impact in Cincinnati. For years, the Bearcats were a non-factor in that town. But Kelly said there was a hunger for BCS football in Cincy, and now you're seeing the interest. |
